Every winter I take a backpack full of camera gear and my trekking poles and go hiking. Recently, I use Tilopa Back Country backpack from f-stop for hiking and cross country skiing.. A great backpack!
I visit several times the Horsetooth Mountain Open Space west of Fort Collins. Typically, I go late afternoon starting uphill on the Horsetooth Rock trail to the base of the rock, then I take a short loop on southern side along Audra Culver trail, and return back downhill on a service road (South Ridge trail) to the trail head already after sunset.
I have two or three photography stops. The first one is after 30-40 minutes of hiking on the rocks with a great view of the Horsetooth Reservoir with Inlet Bay and Fort Collins. So, every winter I shot more or less the same pictures from the exactly same location and similar focal length of my lens, . There are some variations due to composition, the lens choice and zooming, but the view is very similar during last three winters. A little bit of snow and some ice on the lake. This year the Horsetooth is still ice free.
